a quiet sunday morning, broken by the sound of diesel engines

Check out the Hunslet engines that are used for shunting at Maradana. Great big Rolls Royce engines, still running perfectly

Thanks Dominic. I will to my "must do list".

I took a train trip with my daughter over the weekend. It was her first trip by train. I must admit there were two of us...kids I mean. Trains are fascinating.

It's a shame that the little Hunslet at Vihara Maha Devi park doesn't work anymore.

Not only the sound but the whole experience of being close to a rumbling giant that has weathered so much...the faded color of it's paint...the marks the diesel fumes have left on it's chimney... the rattling of the metal side pannels that covers the engine and yes the smell of diesel fumes... It's an experience you will cherish forever.
Wonder if the newer electric/Magnetic trains spawns the same feelings amongst those who meet them!
Is newer technology making things not so romantic? Is that why people will turn their heads to a steam train and not so much for a new locomotive? Or is it simply because older things are more rare and hence become novelties?
